Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Charleston, SC

Move Well Collective offers Pelvic Health services for cis-gender women and men, gender queer, non-binary folks and trans folks because we all have a Pelvic Floor.

Many people first learn about pelvic health as it relates to kegels and leakage. That was where my journey began in 2004 when I took my first pelvic floor course as a fitness professional. I was surprised to learn after years of specialty training that pelvic health also encompasses:

  • prolapse

  • urgency and frequency

  • difficulty emptying

  • leaking just after going to the restroom, post-void dribble

  • pelvic pain

  • painful scars

  • abdominal pain, painful bloating, constipation

  • recovery from trauma

  • pelvic blood flow issues that can contribute to conditions like POTS or erectile dysfunction

  • sexual wellness, desire, arousal, satisfaction, and ability to enjoy sexual activity (as you define it) without pain

Pelvic wellness strategies can be as simple as:

  • breathing with intention

  • leveraging the pelvic floor connection to the breath cycle

  • optimizing blood flow & mobility throughout the pelvis and hips

  • strengthening the pelvic floor as an integral part of the core and hip complex

  • enhancing awareness of the pelvic floor for necessary functions of contraction & relaxation

We aim to make pelvic health accessible. If you have questions about pelvic health and you’d like to talk to an experienced professional, you can book a consult with Dr. Cat for an introductory rate of $40. Dr. Catherine “Cat” Lewan, PT, DPT, C-IAYT

Dr. Cat took her first pelvic floor course as a fitness trainer in 2004. She had the opportunity then to learn from an amazing pelvic PT and began incorporating evidence-based cues into her work as a certified Pilates Instructor and Personal Trainer. When she earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2010 from the University of Illinois Chicago, she set out to specialize further in Orthopedic Manual Therapy and Pelvic Health. Her first role as a PT was at Andersonville Physical Therapy, which did not have a Pelvic Health program at the time. Dr. Cat initiated a pelvic health program and helped to hire and mentor Pelvic PTs such that the program grew and continues to thrive. Her interest in orthopedics and pelvic health grew largely from personal struggles with musculoskeletal aches and pains, as well as pelvic health concerns. She was eventually diagnosed with Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardic Syndrome (POTS), and decided to be transparent about her diagnoses, which attracted many of these patients to her practice. She developed a specialty in managing complex cases related to symptomatic hypermobility, as connective tissues can affect any system of the body including orthopedic, pelvic, neurologic, vasculature and autonomic systems. Her waitlist grew exponentially, and she found therapists to mentor on a holistic, biopsychosocial approach to treating chronic, under-researched and misunderstood symptoms. Unfortunately, the medical model does not offer great solutions for these conditions, but that drives Dr. Cat to keep working to find conservative, non-invasive techniques to help her clients so that they (and she) can live and move as well possible given the challenges they face.
